The Overwork Paradigm Shift
“Death is bad for your career!”
Kay Fittes, February, 2023
Many of my clients have heard the above quote of mine more times than they would like to admit. One of the values of having a career– maximizing coach is having an objective person who can observe behaviors about which the individual has become oblivious. Unfortunately, killing themselves with overwork is a frequent concern of mine with clients.

Breaking the Overwork Habit
-
Dig. Begin journaling about your overwork behavior to get to the core. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to get started:
- When I am not working, how do I feel?
- Do I feel guilty?
- Do I feel like a sloth?
- Do I feel unworthy of…?
-
Interview. First interview yourself, as if you are a reporter. Ask, “What price am I paying for my overworking behavior?” You may note feeling resentful that you don’t have time to take care of yourself or do things for fun. You may note physical ramifications like upset stomach, headaches, weight gain or loss. Next, interview those around you at work and in your personal life. What price are they paying for your overwork? Do they feel annoyed with you, isolated from you, resentful of the added burden they carry?
-
Limit. Start setting limits on your time. Commit to a timeframe for projects at work, in the beginning set more time than you think you will need. Set time frames for meetings and stick to the agenda. Set a time for giving yourself a real lunch. Set up breaks throughout your day. Set a time to stop work for the day. Set up day closing rituals: tidy your office and close it up for the day; set up transition time – if you commute, listen to a podcast or music; change your clothes. Changing clothes reminds you that you are closing the workday and transitioning to personal or family time.
Breaking habits of overwork can be daunting. If digging on your own is not doing it, let’s talk. Perhaps working with a career–maximizer, like me, could jump start your change. It’s amazing what accountability with a coach will produce. Email kay@highheeledsuccess.com or call the office at (513) 561-4288 to set up a complementary 45-minute consultation.
