Thumbs Up!

Understanding Attribution Theory for Success

Kay Fittes, April, 2023

It is critical that you see your thumbprint on your success.  Without owning and internalizing your successes, it’s challenging to raise your self-esteem, feel confident, believe you are worthy of higher pay, promotions, respect, great opportunities, etc.  There is an entire field of study around what you attribute your successes and failures to at work and in life.  Drumroll, please, we are talking about Attribution Theory.

Attribution in Action

  1. Monitor.  Begin today listening for where you attribute your successes and failures.  You may be startled at the frequency that you do not “own” your successes.  Where is your thumbprint?  And are you like a Zoomba machine goggling up every potential failure.  Are you stashing it away for a “beat myself up” session?  The reality is we seldom succeed alone or fail alone.  Give yourself the compassion to turn this around.

  2. Reframe.  Go on an information gathering mission.  Dig deep into a perceived failure.  Be willing to acknowledge your failures, own what is yours but don’t shoulder the blame alone.  Try identifying external factors that did contribute to this misstep.  There is likely plenty of responsibility to go around.

  3. Educate.  Be generous in pointing out this learned gender behavior, first with yourself as an example.  Then, generously note when other women are attributing all their success to others and when they are swallowing every morsel of the failure pie.  This includes not just noticing when women accept their failure behaviors but also when they label themselves as a failure.  This is akin to making sure we are not calling a child a hurtful person but rather a person acting in a hurtful way.

Sometimes we are just too close to see these behaviors in ourselves, let alone do something about them.  Don’t go it alone.  If having a partner in this behavior change would be beneficial, let’s talk.  Email kay@highheeledsuccess.com or call the office at (513) 561-4288 to set up a complementary 45-minute consultation.
