The Career Impact of Mental Overload

Kay Fittes, December, 2024

No, you don’t have a migraine, not having a stroke, no aneurysm, thank goodness!  Yet, you do have a serious problem.  It’s the women’s dilemma of mental overload.  The mental burden for working women that includes juggling children and households.  We are not talking about the actual physical labor of taking care of children, shopping, cleaning, etc.  That physical work is visible and exhausting.  However, the invisible mental overload can be even more destructive.

The Stay in the Moment Solution

Getting out of mental overload is no easy trick.  This is such an ingrained habit for many women that the process of change can be daunting.  Here are three steps to get you started.

  1. Track:  My clients often hear me say, “What gets tracked gives back.”  This means awareness is your impact tool.  For the next three workdays, note every time you think about the personal but cannot do anything about it.  Keep the notations as short as possible.

  2. Analyze:  Later, review the log and see what patterns emerge.  Are your thoughts mostly about tasks to be done in your personal life?  Do they center around worries?  Are they panicky feelings of overwhelm or inability to fulfill your responsibilities?  With this knowledge you will have a better understanding of the issues to be addressed.

  3. Capture and Defer:  Now that you have some insights, it’s time to put this process into action daily.  When personal thoughts jump into your head at work, write down what needs to be done.  This allows you to let it go for now and refocus on work immediately.  When appropriate, assign a date and time to the task.  If you do not capture, you may worry that you will forget to do the task.  This worry only serves to cause you to obsess about it.  Tasks can be easily, worries on the other hand, need a different approach.  In about a week or two you should see the benefit of this process; I have seen this process work with many clients, and I use it daily!

Are you concerned that you can’t pull this off without help?  Some individuals can manage this alone, and others need some assistance.  If you need guidance, let’s talk about it.  We can do a complimentary 45-minute telephone consultation and discuss your situation.  Email kay@highheeledsuccess.com or call (513) 561-4288 to schedule a time to talk.
