Standing Out to Step Up
Kay Fittes, April, 2025
You will not protect yourself by running under the radar! You may have the illusion of safety but it’s only an illusion. There is no protection in anonymity. If no one knows you, you risk everything in the workplace. Are you thinking that this doesn’t apply to you because of your position? Sorry, it applies to you, too! Thinking that it’s only important to stand out when you move up is counterproductive.

The Tip Your Toe into Visibility Guide
Moving into the light can seem daunting! Where to start? Below are three actionable starters to begin your process of achieving greater visibility and career success.
-
Dig: Start digging into your “why” regarding your reluctance to move into the light. Writing about the foundations of your aversion to light can be eye-opening. Need a starter? Try finishing this sentence numerous times: “Standing in the light would mean…” Keep writing until nothing else emerges.
-
Survey: Start listing opportunities for being more visible. Choose one or two to tip your toe into. Choose easy ones to start. Be realistic with yourself. Find a buddy to encourage you or even try this experiment with you. Not only will it be less fearful, but you can compare results and interpret the results together.
-
Try it on: Consider what find of impression your “self-package” is sending. Does your attire match a person stepping into the light? Not sure what’s appropriate in the culture of your workplace? A great next step would be to find a clothing attire role model. Find a woman in your workplace who looks professional and is consistently visible. Emulate her as a guide. Once you decide to make some changes, don’t let cost be a deterrent. Find a great consignment store. They are in almost every community. You can find professional clothing at a great bargain.
Does moving into visibility seem overwhelming? You don’t have to go it alone. Coaching women to greater success in the workplace is what High-Heeled Success, LLC is all about. Not sure if coaching is right for you? Let’s find out with a complimentary 45-minute telephone consultation if coaching with me might be the guidance you need. Testimonial – Marcia Green

Kay Fittes of High-Heeled Success presented, “Kick Your Success Roadblocks to the Curb” to our chapter of the American Business Women’s Association. Her energy and great ideas had all of us still talking about the presentation even after the meeting was over. This was the second time I had had the pleasure of seeing Kay speak, and she did not disappoint. Her sense of humor and engagement of her audience are wonderful. I would highly recommend her to any group.
